What does gutter cleaning cost?
It is priced by gutter length, access height and how much is in the system. A single-storey house with clear access is straightforward. A double-storey, or a system that has not been cleared in years and has growth in it, takes considerably longer. The flow check and system inspection are included.
When should gutters be cleaned in Cape Town?
Late summer or autumn, before the winter fronts arrive, which is the window that actually prevents damage rather than responding to it. Add a clear-out after any significant wind event. Once a year timed properly is the minimum; twice if you have trees close to the roof.
How do I know if my gutters need doing? They look fine.
They usually do look fine, because they fill from the bottom up with sand and grit rather than with visible leaves hanging over the edge. You cannot assess them from the ground. If it has been more than a year, assume they need it.
Can I not just spray them out with a hosepipe?
Not effectively. Leaves will move with water; the packed sand and grit that makes up most of what is in a Cape Town gutter will not, and flushing tends to move it into the downpipe outlet and block that instead. It needs to come out by hand and be taken away.
Do you clear the downpipes as well, or just the gutters?
Both, and then we run water through the whole system to confirm it is actually flowing and discharging where it should. A cleared gutter feeding a blocked downpipe is still a gutter that will overflow in the first front.
