What does rising damp treatment cost in Cape Town?
It depends almost entirely on whether the damp course is bridged or genuinely failed. Bridged is external work plus internal repair and is comparatively modest. A failed course is priced by wall construction, length and how much replastering is required, which is usually the larger share.
The damp appeared after we built the extension. Is that a coincidence?
Very unlikely. Building a new section or pouring a new slab hard against an existing external wall commonly bridges that wall's damp course at the join. It is one of the most frequent causes we find, and the damp usually shows up on the wall that used to be external.
Can I fix a bridged damp course myself?
Sometimes, at least partly. Lowering a bed, breaking gravel away from the wall or cutting paving back to leave a clear gap below the damp course line is straightforward work. Where the bridge is a slab or a structural join it is not, and the internal plaster damage still needs dealing with properly.
How long does a wall take to dry after treatment?
Longer than most people expect, and much longer in winter. Thick masonry that has been wet for years does not dry in a fortnight. This is why we recommend late summer or autumn for the work, so the wall has proper drying conditions before the next wet season tests it.
My neighbour had the same problem and paid a lot for a chemical treatment. Should I?
Not until someone has walked the outside of your house. If the course is bridged, a chemical treatment is being applied to a barrier that is not the problem, and the damp will return. Establish which you have first, and the inspection for that is free.
