Rising Damp Treatment

Rising damp is the most over-diagnosed problem in this trade, and when it is real, the cause is usually not what people expect. Far more damp courses in Cape Town have been bridged by something built against the wall than have actually failed.

Our Process

We check the outside of the building before quoting anything inside. It is the check most likely to save you money, and it costs nothing to have it done.

  1. 1
Free site inspection, inside and out.

The wall, the ground level, the paving, the plaster line, and where the damp course should be.

  2. 2
    An honest finding.

Bridged, genuinely failed, or not rising damp at all.

  3. 3
    Treatment matched to the cause.

Removing a bridge where that is the issue. Where a barrier genuinely has to be reinstated, the method is specified for your wall after inspection, because there is no single answer that suits every construction.

  4. 4
    Reinstatement, follow-up and guarantee.

Plaster made good, then Fred phones once the wall has had time to dry and prove itself. Written, minimum 2-year guarantee.

Why Choose TurboMax

We check the outside of the building before we quote the inside, which sounds obvious and is skipped constantly. It is also the check most likely to save you money, which is why we lead with it.

Fred does the diagnosis himself and has been reading Cape walls since 2000. He follows up once the wall has had time to dry properly, before you have to phone him, and if it has not held we come back at our cost. Our reviews mention honesty more than they mention anything technical, and on damp work that is the thing that matters, because damp is the easiest service in this trade to sell to someone who does not need it.

Written, minimum 2-year guarantee, with extended guarantees available on request, and a 10-year service guarantee where the work is maintained by us on an agreed cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers, including the ones that talk us out of a bigger job.

What does rising damp treatment cost?

It depends almost entirely on whether the damp course is bridged or genuinely failed. A bridged course is external work, lowering ground level or cutting back paving, plus internal repair, and it is comparatively modest. Reinstating a barrier is priced by wall construction, length affected, and how much replastering is needed, which is usually the larger share. We quote the damp work and the replastering separately.

How can I check whether my damp course is bridged before you come?

Walk the outside of the house and look at where the ground meets the wall. You are looking for paving, soil, gravel or a flowerbed sitting level with or above the line two or three brick courses up from the original ground level. If anything is built up against the wall there, that is the first suspect, and it is a much cheaper problem than a failed course.

Why does my damp keep coming back even after treatment?

The most common reason is that the old plaster was never removed. Plaster that has carried damp for years holds hygroscopic salts, and those pull moisture from the air on their own no matter how well the wall behind them was treated. The wall looks like it is still rising damp. It is the plaster.

Which treatment method do you use?

There is no single method that suits every wall, and we will not name one on a website. It depends on the construction, where the moisture is entering, and what the floor and ground are doing. We tell you exactly what we propose for your wall, in writing, after we have seen it.

Can rising damp be treated in winter?

The treatment can be done, but the wall needs time to dry afterwards, and that takes considerably longer in July than in March. Where it is not urgent we usually recommend late summer or autumn, when drying conditions actually let the repair prove itself before the next wet season tests it.
